SHIKARPUR, July 16: A jirga headed by a federal minister and a provincial minister on Sunday settled feuds running for more than 14 months among 12 different tribes over the possession of agricultural land, by imposing penalties, which ran into millions of rupees.

Federal Minister Sardar Yar Mohammad Rind and provincial minister, Mir Manzoor Ahmed Panhwar, who acted as Ameens conducted proceedings of the jirga, which was participated by Sardar Ali Gohar Khan Mahar, Sardar Muqeem Khan Khoso, Mir Altaf Ahmed Unnar, MNA Dr Mohammad Ibrahim Jatoi, Nawabzada Shabbir Ahmed Khan Chandio, Mir Babal Khan Bhayo, Mir Babal Khan Jakhrani, District Nazim Mohammad Arif Khan Mahar and a number of other tribal chieftains.

The jirga, which started proceedings at 11am and concluded at 11.30pm gave verdict on 109 murders, including murders of Babal Khan Qambrani and Bhaledino Khan Marfani who belonged to chieftains families, three women and injuries to 53 people sustained in clashes.

Ameens recorded statements of disputing parties and decided that Rs300,000 each would be paid as blood money to the bereaved families for murder of a man, Rs600,000 each for murder of a woman, Rs900,000 for the murder of Sardar Babal Khan Qambrani and Rs600,000 for the death of Bhaledino Khan Marfani.

They also fixed Rs150,000, Rs100,000 and Rs50,000, respectively, as compensation for each injured person according to the seriousness of wounds. The jirga in total announced Rs34.5 million as blood money for 109 murders to be paid to the victim families within six months with the first instalment payable in three months.

The jirga verdict said that 43 men, three women and 25 injured people belonging to Qambrani, Brohi and their allied tribes were killed, while 66 people belonging to Marfanis were killed and 28 injured.

The jirga warned that any tribe found involved in violating its decision would have to pay Rs2 million as fine besides facing legal action.
