Thal canal project opposed

DADU, March 6: A large number of growers, activists of political parties and workers of NGOs held a rally on Wednesday against the construction of the greater Thal canal.

The protesters, after marching on the main roads of the town, gathered outside the press club where they held a demonstration for two hours.

Carrying banners and placards they raised slogans against the construction of the greater Thal canal.

The demonstrators were led by the president, Action Committee of the Abadgar Association, Chhinni union council Nazim Ghulam Ali Khan Shahani, JSQM leader Rajab Ali and Naseer Ahmed Shaikh.

Addressing the rally, Ghulam Ali Khan Shahani said that the greater Thal canal would completely destroy the agricultural system in Sindh and turn the fertile lands of Sindh barren.

He announced that a big rally would be taken out against the construction of the greater Thal canal in Dadu town on March 22.

He invited all the local leaders of social organizations, NGOs, and political parties to attend the rally. He said that the federal government should withdraw from the project in the greater interest of the country.

Later, the protesters observed token hunger strike in front of the press club.

INJURED: A constable, Manzoor Ali Jatoi, seriously injured his wife, Ms Haleema (25), with an axe in the Ali Mardan Jatoi village, Mehar Taluka, on Wednesday. The woman has been admitted to the taluka hospital, Mehar, where her condition is stated to be critical.

EYE CAMP: A free eye camp was held by the Sindh Graduates Association, Kachho, in Tando Rahim town on Tuesday.

Chhinni Union Council Nazim Ghulam Ali Khan Shahani announced Rs10,000 for medicines at the opening ceremony of the eye camp.
