DERA GHAZI KHAN, June 28: Former caretaker prime minister Mir Balakh Sher Mazari has invited Ameena Jaafar Leghari and her spouse to join the Pakistan People’s Party after she resigned from her national assembly seat in protest against the alleged nepotism and violation of merit policy in recruitment of constables in Rajanpur, it is learnt here.

A couple of weeks back, people of the area had accorded a warm welcome to Ameena Jaafar when she came to her native district after tendering resignation.

Mrs Ameena Jaafar told this correspondent that various political parties, including PPP, had contacted her and she would decide in the light of the aspirations of the electorate.

VOTERS’ LISTS: People did not show interest in the voters’ lists displayed at 623 centres set up in the district and registration of their names in the rolls, said assistant election commissioner Nadeem Zubair here on Thursday.

He said the election commission has tried its best to eradicate the mistakes from the voters’ lists.

He said the lists were displayed to invite people to point out mistakes. But, the commission has got a lukewarm response from the public, he added.

He appealed to the people to visit display centres, check the lists and point out flaws in it so that they can be removed.

He said computerised national identity card was required to enrol a name in the voters’ list.

Replying to a question, he said 646,000 eligible voters have been registered in the new lists as against 783,000 registered previously. Of them, 300,000 people had exercised their right to vote in the 2002 general elections, he added.

Meanwhile, the in charge of display centre set up in Model Town primary school said there was poor response from the educated population of localities like Satellite Town for registration of new entries or correction of their names.
