ISLAMABAD, March 5: A nexus between some unscrupulous students and drug-peddlers is freely providing narcotics and liquor to the students of Quaid-i-Azam University (QAU), particularly those living in hostels, a Dawn investigation revealed.
The failure on the part of university administration in checking such unlawful activities is the sole reason that this business has touched alarming proportions at the varsity campus, a student said.
He said contraband, ranging from top-quality heroin to opium and imported liquor, was easily available in the university hostels.
The hostel administration is helpless against these students, most of whom have finished their studies and are still occupying their rooms even after the passage of three to six years.
Sources in the university revealed that an employee of the MNA hostel, Islamabad, was the leading supplier and frequently visited the university. Some employees of different embassies also provide liquor to students, they added.
The third major source from where the drugs come to the university is the so-called Malangs at the nearby shrine of Bari Imam. These impostors, who permanently reside in the surroundings of the shrine, provide liquor and opium etc. to not only the university students, but also to citizens of the federal capital.
Recently, Kashif, a student of anthropology department, died after consuming spurious liquor at the university campus. The investigation revealed that security personnel posted at the main gates of the university knew that which vehicle was carrying drugs into the university, but they were not allowed to check these. If, by any mistake, any guard dared to check the vehicle, he was subjected to severe torture by the students, the sources said.
The students, who are involved in drug-trafficking, have close links with university bus drivers. Since the university transport vehicles are not frisked by the law enforcement agencies, the students, in connivance with the drivers, use these to transport drugs to hostels.
When contacted, the QAU provost, Dr Fiyaz Chaudhry, held the drug-peddlers living near the shrine of Bari Imam responsible for providing drugs to students.
The QAU has brought the issue to the notice of Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) administration several times, but to no avail, he said.
