TOBA TEK SINGH, March 5: The police have no clue yet to Daniel Pearl kidnap-and-murder case suspect Amjad Ali Farooqi.
Sources said no significant information had been obtained from Muhammad Amer and Muhammad Javed, his two brothers who have been interrogated by several teams and remain in Toba Tek Singh police custody three weeks after their arrest.
Toba police, however, denied arresting Amjad’s wife. A source in the police said she had been arrested from Chak 478 GB near Samundri, where she was visiting her parents, apparently by a team from Faisalabad or Lahore.
Farooqi’s father and a brother, who had reportedly left on a six week preaching mission before police raided their house in Chak 687/27 GB near Sindhilanwali, have yet to return. Several other relatives, too, are said to have left the village to avoid the police.
SAFETY COMMISSION: The district council will elect four members for its public safety commission through secret balloting on March 9.
Returning officer District and Sessions Judge Muhammad Akram Zaki will supervise the elections to be held at the district council hall.
All Nazims, members elected on seats reserved for women, minorities and peasants will elect four men and a woman for the eight-member commission on proportional representation basis.
District Naib Nazim Haji Ghulam Rabbani informed the house members that they can file their nomination papers before the returning officer during office timings on March 6 (today).
The other four members will be selected through interview by a panel of district selection committee members, headed by District and Sessions Judge Akram Zaki and comprising Hameeda Chaudhry and Chaudhry Tanvir Ahmad.
WARRANTS: A senior civil judge issued on Tuesday warrants for the arrest of police Inspector Sadiq Ali Dogar on the complaint filed by a local lawyer.
Inspector Dogar had been the SHO of the city police station.
Advocate Chaudhry Abdul Naeem had submitted that the police officer misbehaved with him. The court will now take up the matter on April 5.
