GUJRANWALA, June 25: A minor boy sustained injuries when the under-construction upper storey of DHQ hospital’s trauma centre suddenly collapsed here on Monday while many other visitors had a narrow escape.

Reports said the health department had allocated Rs16 million for the construction of trauma centre’s upper storey along with purchase of equipment. The buildings department awarded its contract to Munir and company.

On Monday, labourers were building the lentil of the centre when a 100sq-ft portion collapsed. As a result Mazher Abbas of Jagna who came there along with his parents to inquire after one of their relatives sustained injuries.

After the incident, medical superintendent Dr Ali Muhammad visited the site and held the contractor and the buildings department responsible for it.

However, the contractor denied that poor quality material was being used in the construction of the trauma centre. He said the portion collapsed due to defective shuttering and not substandard material.

CRACKDOWN: The district police will launch a crackdown on vehicles without number plates from July 1 and asked the people to get them registered till June 30.

This was stated by City Police Officer DIG (operation) Khadim Husain Bhatti while speaking at a meeting of rent-a-car and motorcycle owners on the premises of local chamber of commerce and industry here on Monday.

He said a number of unregistered vehicles, including cars and motorcycles, were being plied on roads.

He asked the owners to ensure registration till Jun 30 otherwise action would be taken against them.

He asked the people to install satellite tracking system in their vehicles to avert robbery.

Nandipur Town SP Afzal Butt, Qila Dedar Singh Town SP Khwaja Rehan Masood, DSP Faiz Ahmad Ranja and other officers were also present.
