LAHORE, June 24: A detained accused was allegedly strangled by his brother at the Kahna Central Investigation Agency lock-up on Sunday.

Police claimed the deceased had annoyed his brother because he had confessed to his crimes during interrogation.

The killing in the lock-up raises questions about the safety of the people in police custody.

Kot Lakhpat CIA Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Imtiaz Bhalli told Dawn Ramzan, alias Jani, of Phoolnagar, and his brother, Abdul Majeed, were detained by the police two days ago for a dacoity-cum-murder case registered in 2005.

Both brothers with four other people gunned down Maqsood on resistance and drove away with his tractor in Nishtar Colony on Nov 8, 2005.

Their brother Rasheed, maternal uncle Shaukat and two other unidentified killers are at large.

The DSP claimed Jani had confessed that he had murdered Maqsood and driven away with two tractors, which annoyed Majeed.

“Around 2:30am, Jani went to latrine in the lock-up and Majeed followed him. He strangled Jani there with a piece of cloth,” the DSP quoted the two others also detained in the same lock-up.

On raising alarm by other detained people, policemen entered the lock-up immediately but by then Jani had died, he claimed.

“I killed my brother because he had confessed all the crimes breaking the traditions of Khokhars by surrendering before the police,” Bhalli said the accused said so. The DSP said a murder case was registered against Majeed.

He added police had seized two tractors on the information of the deceased.
