KARACHI, June 17: Supoj Saenia kept Thailand’s supremacy intact when he outclassed Indian veteran Yasin Merchant by seven frames to nil in a one-sided final to claim his maiden Asian snooker title on Sunday.

Supoj needed just around three hours to rout the twice former Asian champion 77-26, 69-68, 78-16, 63-29, 59-26, 64-52, 99-26.

Earlier, hosts Pakistan earned some consolation when Khurram Agha secured third position after receiving a walkover from China’s Jin Long in the playoff for the third and fourth positions of the 23rd Asian Snooker Championship.

“I’m happy to win the prestigious title in my third successive attempt,” a jubilant Supoj told Dawn through an interpreter.

Supoj, who has the Asian under-21 title under his belt in addition to Busan Asian Games silver medal, will travel to England next month to play on the professional circuit. He had played on the pro-circuit some three years ago.

“Winning and losing is part of the game and it is a fact that Thailand players were superior to India and Pakistan,” said a dejected Yasin after losing tamely.

Supoj, who has the honour of slamming highest break of the championship (109) against Bahrain’s Habib Sabah in a pre quarter-final, made a disastrous start in the championship when he went down 3-4 to Khurram Agha in the opening league match of group C where he finished the runner-up.

But after hiccup, the Thai never looked back and blanked UAE’s Mohammad Shaheb 5-0 in the quarter-final and China’s Jin Long 6-1 in the semi-final.

Though he could pile up only solid breaks of 71 and 43 in the third and sixth frames on Sunday, his brilliant potting earned him repeated applause from the spectators.

He had a firm grip on the match right from the word go and except once in the second frame, never allowed Yasin to settle down.

On the other hand, Yasin, who too suffered an astonishing 3-4 defeat against Habib Sabah in the preliminary round, recovered from that shock and surprised the followers of the game by making it to the final.

He overcame China’s Liu Chuang 5-4 in the quarter-final before beating Khurram 6-4 in Saturday’s first semi-final.

After conceding the opener 26-77, Yasin compiled a splendid break of 43 but was unfortunate to lose 68-69 to trail 0-2 in the match.

In the remaining five frames, the Indian maestro though earned mild applause from crowd but he was all at sea against his younger opponent.

Supoj pocketed the winner’s purse of $2500 and a running trophy from ACBS president Sindhu Pulsirivong besides getting $100 for the highest break. Tahir Ahmed awarded the champion another trophy on behalf of PBSA.

Runner-up Yasin received $1200 while Khurram and Jin were awarded $ 600 and $ 300 for securing third and fourth positions, respectively.

President PBSA Ali Asghar Valika and Sindh Minister for Labour, Transport and Commerce, Adil Siddiqui, were also present on the occasion.

International referee Shabbir Daruwalla, who has two Asian Games five world and 10 Asian championships to his credit, supervised the final.
