GUJRANWALA, June 15: The first pre-monsoon rain which lashed the city on Friday exposed the performances of highway and other departments when newly constructed People’s Colony underpass and other roads were inundated.

The rain started at 2am and continued till 6am also exposed the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) claim of high preparedness for monsoon.

The rainwater entered houses and shops in low-lying areas.

WASA also failed to pump out water from Ghakkhar town as motors have burnt. Meanwhile, Nandipur Town Jamaat-i-Islami leaders accused the highway department of corruption in the construction of underpass. They said they would move court against the department for defective construction of underpass soon.

BUDGET: The Qila Dedar Singh town approved Rs190 million budget for fiscal year 2007-08 amid uproar by the opposition on Friday.

The meeting was presided over by naib nazim Tariq Javed Butt while nazim Tariq Mahmood presented the budget. The income was estimated at Rs158 million while Rs58 million have been allocated for development. Mr Mahmood said Rs17 million have been allocated for the purchase of new machinery and Rs25 million for ongoing development schemes. — Correspondent
