LONDON, June 11: The euro fell slightly against the dollar on Monday as traders weighed up the latest comments from ECB president Jean-Claude Trichet about eurozone interest rates.

In late European trading, the euro dropped to $1.3357, from $41.3369 late on Friday in New York.

The dollar gained to 121.80 yen, from 121.74 yen late on Friday.

On Friday the euro had slumped to $1.3321, the lowest point since April 4, as US inflation jitters prompted investors to consider a possible US rate rise this year.

Trichet, speaking to the European Parliament's economic and monetary affairs committee, was asked about speculation that the European Central Bank might pause in its cycle of interest rate rises.

The euro changed hands at $1.3357, against $1.3369 on Friday, 162.71 yen (162.75), 0.6787 pounds (0.6787) and 1.6545 Swiss francs (1.6512).

The dollar stood at 121.80 yen (121.74) and 1.2389 Swiss francs (1.2352).

The pound was being traded at $1.9683 (1.9698).

On the London Bullion Market, the price of gold slipped to $650.30 per ounce, from $655.25 late on Friday. —AFP
