PESHAWAR, June 10: The Cantonment authorities have asked the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) to shift its sub-office from its present premises, sources said.

“The Cantonment Station Commander asked the Unicef in December last year to move its office because the rules don’t allow existence of a foreigners’ office in its limits,” sources said.

Later the Unicef officials wrote an application asking the authorities to allow them to continue with their operations in the area, they said.

The sources said the UN mission in Islamabad had taken up the issue with senior officials.

The Unicef had occupied the compound about two years ago and the Cantonment authorities did not raise objections then. The sources said the United States Consulate and the Iranian Culture Centre were also located in the Cantonment area, but the authorities did not apply the same rules in their case.
