TOBA TEK SINGH, June 5: After the passage of one-and-a-half month, Kamalia police have not registered a case against the supporters of a religious leader who allegedly beat a shopkeeper for calling the leader a ‘debater’.

Complainant Hameed Mughal told reporters on Tuesday he was sitting on his shop on April 22 when 12 followers of Maulana Sadiq Sialvi tortured him as he had called the Maulana a “debater” while his three supporters insisted he was a scholar.

He said he had contacted the city police and the deputy superintendent of police (DSP) but no case was registered against the accused. He wrote to Punjab Inspector General Ahmad Nasim about his ordeal and on his directions, the district police officer directed DSP Saeed Randhawa to take action against the accused.

The DSP forwarded his application to Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Akram. He said other shopkeepers also told the ASI that accused Irshad, Abdul Rehman, Taj, Tahir, Amjad and seven other unidentified people had tortured the complainant but the ASI refused to register case.

Maulana Sialvi says only hot words were exchanged between his well-wishers and the complainant. He alleged the complainant had used derogatory remarks against him but he had pacified his supporters not to take any action. He said he did not know if Mughal had given any application for the registration of a case against his supporters.— Correspondent
