LAHORE, May 28: The road caravan that the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) has organised is scheduled to reach Lahore on Tuesday (today) marking the conclusion of the first phase of its ‘journey to democracy’ which began from Rawalpindi on May 27.

MMA president Qazi Husain Ahmad, secretary-general Maulana Fazlur Rehman and other top leaders of the alliance are scheduled to address a public rally at Lohari Gate after Isha prayers. They are to enter the city at Thokar Niaz Beg in the evening.

The caravan reached Gujranwala from Rawalpindi on May 27 and resumed its journey to Faisalabad on Monday. They will resume the last leg of the journey on Tuesday from Faisalabad and reach Lahore passing through Tandlianwala, Okara, Pattoki and Bhai Pheru.

Leaders of other component parties, including JUP president Shah Mohammad Ans Noorani, Jamiat Ahle Hadith president Prof Sajid Mir, JUI-S amir Maulana Abdur Rahim Naqshbandi and Pakistan Islami Tehrik’s Maulana Abdul Jalil Naqvi are also scheduled to speak at the rally among others.

The MMA’s Punjab leaders have appealed to the people to give a rousing reception to the road caravan which, they said, was primarily meant to save the country and safeguard its Islamic identity.

They said all arrangements for the rally at Lohari Gate had been made.

Meanwhile, Jamaat-i-Islami leaders MNA Hafiz Salman Butt and Ameerul Azeem said all arrangements for the rally had been completed in consultation with the city police high-ups.
