CAMP VICTORIA (Serbia), May 25: Nato-led peacekeepers and officials on Friday destroyed dozens of guns seized by military and police in the tense province of Kosovo. The guns, mainly old automatic weapons, are among some 7,000 illegal arms that will be destroyed over the next several weeks.

Their destruction comes amid tensions over the future of Kosovo, now being debated by the UN Security Council.

Kosovo, which has been administered by the UN and patrolled by some 16,000 Nato-led peacekeepers since the 1999 end of a war between Serb forces and ethnic Albanian rebels, is believed to be awash with guns and other weapons.—AP
