MIRPURKHAS, May 24: A landlord, Pir Iftikhar Ahmed Jan Sarhandi, has accused the Umerkot police of failing to arrest an accused in a murder attempt case despite the lapse of one month.

Talking to Dawn, he said that his brother Pir Zubair Ahmed Jan Sarhandi was injured when hit by a car driven by Pir Abdul Rehman Jan Sarhandi in Rasoolabad near Samaro town. He said dozens of peasants and labourers had witnessed the incident and added that despite being hit, his brother was kicked and beaten with gun butts. He said that the accused hit his brother with an intention to kill his brother.

He said that Mr Zubair was taken to the Samaro taluka hospital and then referred to the Liaquat University Hospital, Hyderabad, where he stayed for 15 days.

He said that when approached, Samaro SHO Liaquat Dars refused to register a case. Later, on his complaint the SHO lodged an FIR under section 279, 337(g), 506, 504, 337A(i), 337F(i) PPC against Mr Rehman, former chairman of the District Public Safety Commission. Mr Iftikhar said during investigation, inquiry officer Khuda Bux Mangrio incorporated section 506(ii) and 324 PPC in the FIR, but the police had made no efforts to arrest the accused.

He appealed to the chief minister, governor and police chief of Sindh, the RPO of Hyderabad and the DIG of Mirpurkhas to ensure that the accused was arrested.

He said that a dispute existed between the accused and his family over agriculture land and cases were pending in court.
