MANSEHRA, May 11: The Mansehra district government has wound up the Kashtara tent village after the last batch of 50 displaced families left the settlement for their native areas.

Official sources said on Friday that in-charges of camps presented their reports at a review meeting held at the DCO office here. Speaking on the occasion, Lala Mukaram, a UNDP official and in-charge of the Kashtara camp, said the displaced families had left the camp after which it had been closed down.

The meeting was told that the World Food Programme, World Vision and the district government had jointly run the Kashtara tent village, which provided shelter to some 350 families.

In-charges of the Kashtara, Jabba, Siren and Mara tent villages said 1,156 displaced families initially lived in the camps but their number had now dropped to 647 families.

The in-charge of the Jabba tent village, Ali Asghar, said 435 families were living in the camp. He said the evacuation process was under way and displaced families were leaving for their native villages voluntarily.

Meanwhile, a meeting of the Custodian Committee for Rights of the Displaced Families was held in the Jabba tent village on Friday which was attended by heads of displaced families and presided over by its president Abdul Rehman.

The meeting criticised the issuance of notices for evacuation of camps by May 18 and demanded their immediate withdrawal. The participants resolved to resist any move to expel them from the tent villages until the payment of compensation to them.

The meeting also constituted a delegation to meet President Gen Pervez Musharraf during his visit to Mansehra on May 16 to apprise him of their problems.
