MIRPURKHAS, May 6: Speakers at a seminar held here on Sunday said that prisons were producing anti-social elements because poor prisoners were tortured while influential ones enjoy facilities through payment of illegal gratification to the staff.

The seminar was organised by Council for All Under Privileged Segments Eminence (CAUSE) here on Sunday.

Through different resolutions, it demanded facilities for the prisoners, good quality food, library, computer centre and play grounds to them.

Addressing the seminar, the former President of District Bar Association Mirpurkhas, Dost Mohammad Kolachi, said that government should introduce reforms in the prisons to make the criminals responsible citizens of the society.

Social worker Khuda Bux Leghari said that the constitution ensures basic rights to every citizen.

How law and constitution could be implemented in a country where chief justice was detained and elected prime minister was hanged, he regretted.

Chairman of the CAUSE, Asghar Narejo, said that rulers had amended the constitution according to their wishes who did not introduce any reforms in the prisons which were still being run according to British government laws.

He said that officers in uniform were posted on the key posts of the government institutions including prisons, which was violation of rules.

Among others, Taj Mohammad Rind of Sindh Graduates Association, Ghulam Qadir Mirani, advocate, Najaf Leghari of JSQM, Amanullah Soomro, advocate, Shahid Panhwar and Khair Mohammad Narejo also spoke.
