TOBA TEK SINGH, April 26: ‘Education for all’ walk was held here on Thursday under the auspices of National Commission for Human Development and the education department.
It started from Government Model Elementary School and after marching through Imambargah Road, Jhang Road, Akaalwala Road and Dr Naseer Road ended at the same place.
District nazim Chaudhry Abdul Sattar led the walk, while DCO Nawazish Ali, EDO (education) Malik Bashir Awan, DEO (secondary) Chaudhry Hafeez, DEO (elementary, male) Ashraf Ali Haral, DEO (elementary, female) Ms Najma Manzoor, National Commission for Human Development district programme manager Malik Habibullah, primary education coordinator Zafar Ali and students and teachers of various educational institutions participated in it.
Speakers said that there were 52,000 children in the district who were not admitted to any school. But due to the efforts of the national commission and education department, there were only 4,000 children who were still not admitted to schools.
Mr Sattar claimed that the district government was spending 70 per cent of its budget on education.
The DCO stated that under the Punjab Education Sector Reforms Programme more than 500 schools in the district had been given facilities at a cost of Rs30 million.
At the end of the walk, the nazim and the DCO awarded certificates to the best teachers.
ACCIDENT: Two friends of a groom were killed and two others seriously injured when their car rammed into a tree on Pirmahal-Khanewal Road near canal bridge in Chak 25, some 40 kilometres from here, on Thursday.
The car was going to Islampura, a locality in Toba Tek Singh, from Khanewal along with the marriage procession when the accident took place due to over speeding. Mazhar Abbas and Tariq of Khanewal were killed on the spot while car driver Manzoor and Asif were admitted to Pirmahal hospital.
Eyewitnesses claimed that the driver and others were drunk while liquor bottles were also recovered from the car.
The wedding party remained in the hospital for four hours.
LAWYERS’ STRIKE: The hunger strike camp continued on Thursday in the district bar room against the suspension of Chief Justice of Pakistan.
Arshad Shahid and Habib Chaudhry observed hunger strike.
The other bar association in the district also observed strike.
