NAWABSHAH, April 19: A rally and a token hunger strike were staged in Sakrand against the failure of Nawabshah police to recover Ashok Kumar and Saleem Solangi from the clutches of kidnappers.

Thursday’s procession began from Sakrand Taluka Hospital and ended at Sahafi Chowk where the participants set up a hunger strike camp.

Protesters, including family members of the two kidnapped men, were carrying placards and raising slogans against the police’s inefficiency.

Speaking on the occasion, STPP leader Qamar Buriro, Ghulam Shah Leghari of the PPP, Yousuf Memon of Shehri Ittehad, and Dawood Solangi of Solangi Welfare Association criticised the police’s failure in the recovery of the two. They slammed the deteriorating law and order situation in the district with each passing day.

They gave the police three-day ultimatum after which they’ll widen their protest and block the National Highway.

Haresh Kumar, brother of Ashok, told Dawn that the family’s miseries were compounding every day as even after the lapse of 24 days they were unaware of Ashok’s whereabouts.

He went on to say that though the DPO, Nawabshah, Dr Ghulam Sarwar Jamali, was in constant touch with the family assuring of good results but nothing substantial has come out as yet.

BOOKED: About 19 persons have been booked by the Nawabshah police for kidnapping two people from Deh Obhari Sawri near Doultpur on Thursday.

On the directives of the Sessions Judge, Nawabshah, the Pubio police registered an FIR under section 506/2, 395, 435, 164 , 147, 148 and 149, PPC, on the complaint of Koro Khan Rind, resident of Deh Obhari Sawri. He stated that he had 16 acres of land and on April 6, around 16 people attacked the village, burned their standing wheat crop, looted 50 bags of wheat, beat them up and kidnapped Ameen Rind and Ismail Rind.

No arrest was made till the filing of this report.

In another case, police booked four people on Thursday for kidnapping a young girl.

A labourer, Shahanshah, resident of Linepar area, lodged an FIR under section 365-B, stating that on March 26, his two daughters Sanam and Anam went to buy notebooks. On the way, four persons -- Tahir Makrani, his brothers Babu and Munir and uncle Hameed -- kidnapped Anam in a rickshaw.

No arrest was made till the filing of this report.

SHOP LOOTED: Three unidentified armed men looted a shop opposite police lines on Wednesday night.

Three unidentified armed persons entered into an auto engineering shop opposite police lines and after holding owner, Muhammad Aslam, and his staff at gunpoint looted mobile phones, wrist watches and cash.
