Two prisoners escape fromcustody

GUJRANWALA, April 19: Five accused involved in heinous crimes managed to escape from the police custody in Pindi Bhattian on Thursday.

While police succeeded in re-arresting the three accused.

Reports said that police were escorting accused Nazir alias Babu, Ashraf, Jehangir Bhatti, Abid Bhatti and Nazir Ahmed to Pindi Bhattian from the central jail in Gujranwala to produce them before a court. Near Pindi Bhattian, prisoners overpowered police guards and made good their escape. However, policemen chased the accused and caught three of them, Ashraf, Abid Bhatti and Nazir.

Police have registered a case and are investigating.

EDHI CENTRE: The Edhi Centre removed 106 bodies of the people who were killed in separate incidents in the district besides shifting 966 patients to hospital during the last fortnight.

Gujranwala Edhi Centre in charge Masood Chaudhry stated this while taking to Dawn here on Thursday.

He said the centre was providing ambulance service on low rates.

He said ambulances were charging Rs50 of up to 20 kilometres distance and Rs500 for 71 kms (up to Lahore).

He said the centre was spending Rs550,000 on payment of salaries to staff in Gujranwala.

He appreciated the philanthropists who were offering donations to the centre and urged others to come forward and take part in charity works being launched by Maulana Edhi.

PO killed: A proclaimed offender who was wanted in 28 incidents of robbery, murder and kidnap for ransom, was killed in an encounter here on Thursday at Dher Kalan (Naushera Virkan).

Police received information that two rival groups, led by Ijaz alias Jaggo and Zafar, were firing on each other. A team reached the spot. On seeing the police, they opened fire. During an encounter, Ijaz of Mangoki Virkan was killed on the spot.

Police recovered a kalashnikov and magazine from him. The police said Ijaz was wanted in 28 cases in Gujranwala, Sheikhupura and Hafizabad.

He had allegedly kidnapped the owner of a rice mills in Naushera Virkan and demanded ransom for his release.

CPO Khadim Husain Bhatti has announced cash prize and commendation certificates for the raiding party.
