NAWABSHAH, April 5: Family members of a seven-year-old boy who died in the course of an operation at the Nawabshah Medical College Hospital a day ago staged a demonstration outside the local press club on Thursday seeking action against the surgeons who they accused of negligence that led to the boy’s death.

Carrying body of Fayaz Dahri the protesters raised slogans against the doctors and demanded justice.

Hassan Dahiri, late Fayaz’s father, warned before journalists that he would commit self immolation if the doctors involved were not suspended and punished within three days.

He said that that Fayaz was admitted to paediatric surgery ward of NMC hospital as he had complained of abdominal pain, which was later diagnosed as appendicitis.

Surgeon Dr. Bashir Ahmed Soomro and Dr. Ali Raza Brohi delayed the operation for three days and did it only after the family approached the principal of NMC. The boy was operated upon on April 4 but died during the operation after his intestine had burst, he said.

The NMC Principal Prof Ali Akbar Ghumro informed that Dr. Ali Raza Brohi and Dr. Bashir Ahmed Soomro were adjusted as assistant professors in paediatrics surgery ward and a written agreement was made that whoever admitted a patient would also operate it.

He said that Dr. Bashir Soomro admitted the patient but delayed the operation because he was trying to treat him through medicines. He said that he had formed a three-member inquiry committee, which would submit its report within three days after which action would be taken, if anyone was found guilty.

Dr. Bashir Ahmed Soomro said that after conducting tests he operated upon him and shifted him later to a ward where his condition became serious and he had to be shifted to Intensive Care Unit where he expired.

He said that the patient had intestinal perforation and surgery was successfully done. He might have died due to post operative infection, he said.
