German held in Pakistan on terror charge: report

BERLIN, March 10: Pakistan’s secret services have arrested a German with Bosnian citizenship over suspected links to Al Qaeda, Der Spiegel magazine says in an edition to be published on Sunday.

Nihad C, a 29-year-old from Pforzheim in south-west Germany, was arrested on January 30 on suspicion of having attended a terror camp or planning to attend one, the magazine reported.

The man was known to the German authorities for having contacts with Islamists in Germany and Bosnia, Der Spiegel said. A spokesman for the German federal prosecutor on Saturday refused to comment on the reports.

The magazine claimed Nihad C has links to Micheal N, a German convert to Islam who was also arrested by Pakistan’s secret services over suspected contacts with Islamists.

The German government is said to have asked to contact the two prisoners.

German media recently reported several cases of German residents arrested in Pakistan on suspicion of being Islamists.

The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung this week highlighted the cases of two Turkish nationals living in Germany who were arrested at an Islamist training camp on the border with Afghanistan.—AFP
