KASUR, March 5: Police have registered cases against two candidates for the office of naib nazim of union council 6 and their 66 supporters for resorting to firing and attacking each other during by-election on Monday.

Police said Amin Ghora and Muzaffar Ahmad and their supporters started firing in the air and throwing bricks and bottles besides using clubs against each other which resulted in injuries to more than two dozen people from both sides.

Police have reportedly arrested Muzaffar and Amin along with their supporters and admitted the injured to the DHQ hospital.

Meanwhile, Amin won the by-election with the support of the ruling PML by 128 votes.

TANNERIES: Standing committee on environment chairman Senator Mohammad Ali Barohee has said environment protection was on top of the government’s priorities.

He was speaking after attending a briefing on Kasur Tanneries Waste Management project here on Monday.

He said environment degeneration could be stopped if the government and people join hands.

Mr Barohee said the committee would submit its recommendations for phase II of the projects so that funds could be released at the earliest.

Earlier, the committee was told that the project was the second largest project in Pakistan which would filter 75 tons of tanneries’ wastewater per day which could irrigate 400 acres of land.

The other members of the committee who visited the project are; Prof Dr Senator Abdul Qadir Pirzada, Senator Maulana Rahat Husain, Senator M Husain and Senator Salam Shah.
