LAHORE, March 2: A young man committed suicide after shooting his mother and two brothers over ‘financial problems’ in Gujjarpura here on Friday.

Police said Ramzan, 26, had been living with his parents and three brothers — Salman, 23, Bilal, 20 and Zeeshan, 18 — near the Government Degree College, Kot Khwaja Saeed.

On Friday, he opened fire on his mother, Nighat Sultan, 60, and three bothers and then shot himself dead. The injured were rushed to hospital where Nighat, Salman and Bilal were pronounced dead on arrival. The condition of Zeeshan was stated to be critical.

A police official quoted a suicide note written by Ramzan saying: “My family was running under debts and we could not face the creditors any more. Our father kept us illiterate which compelled us to work as labourers.”

Ramzan also held his father responsible for his mother’s illness who was reportedly a cancer patient.

His father was not at home when the gruesome incident took place.

A neighbour said the family members often used to quarrel over different issues. He said Ramzan might have killed his family members after having a quarrel with them over some domestic issue.

ROOF COLLAPSE: A 17-year-old girl and a minor boy were killed and two others injured when the roof of a plastic factory collapsed in the Lower Mall area on Friday.

Saima, Maria, Nasrin and Bilal were present in the factory located near Mian Munshi Hospital when its roof caved in. Rescue 1122 shifted the injured to hospital where Saima and Bilal died. The condition of the injured was stated to be critical.

FOUND DEAD: An army man was found dead in Shafiqabad on Friday.

Police said some passersby spotted the body of Ahmad Ali, 38, lying in the fields. He was strangulated.

The bullet-ridden body of an unidentified man was found in Shadbagh.

ACCIDENT: Two brothers were killed in a road accident in Green Town on Friday.

Ali Raza, 24, was going along with his younger brother, Saddam, on a motorcycle when a truck hit and killed them.

They were residents of Abid Colony of Ghazi Road.

The truck driver managed to escape.

GANGS SMASHED: The capital city police claimed on Friday to have busted 141 gangs of criminals and arrested their 836 members during January and February.

The police recovered looted and stolen property worth Rs60.7 million from them. As many as 2,348 proclaimed offenders and 2,163 court absconders were also arrested during the period under review.

On the direction of CCPO (Additional IGP) Malik Muhammad Iqbal, all divisional SPs launched a special campaign against criminals involved in heinous crimes.

The arrested gangsters confessed to committing 946 incidents. The booty recovered included Rs6 million in cash, two kilogram gold ornaments, 15 cars, 70 motorcycles, nine bicycles, 398 cell phones, 11 TV sets, five CD players and 25 wrist watches.

As for the POs, 107 were wanted in murder cases, 168 in attempted murder, 45 in dacoity, 85 in robbery and 318 in burglary cases registered with different police stations. Similarly 2,163 court absconders were taken into custody; 26 for attempted murder, eight in dacoity cases, 13 in robbery and 82 in burglary cases. The police seized 16 Kalashnikoves, 134 rifles, 122 guns, 132 revolvers, 1,529 pistols and 13 carbines and registered cases against over 1,900 people.

The law enforcers also captured 1,930 drug pushers and recovered two kilogram heroin, 367 kg charas, one kilogram opium and 3,726 bottles of liquor.

The CCPO has directed all officers to step up their efforts to eliminate crime and accelerate the campaign launched against the proclaimed offenders.

He also called upon the divisional SPs to promote community policing in their respective areas and hold informal meetings with notables.

He directed them to re-organise patrolling system and make it more effective in crime-prone areas, besides deploying officials in civvies in markets, trade centres and other important places.

KITE FLYING: Malik Iqbal directed the police officers on Friday to remain vigilant on Saturday and Sunday against any violation of the ban on kite flying.

A circular warned that stern action would be taken against the officials who would fail to comply with the directions.
