KARACHI: Towns get Rs18m for Eid arrangements

KARACHI, Feb 21: The City Government has released Rs18 million to the Town Municipal Administrations for distribution at Rs1 million for each Town for making special arrangements on the occasion of Eid.

The Town Municipal Administrations have been directed to use this amount for making essential arrangements for timely lifting and disposal of offal and ensuring cleanliness in the city.

This was stated at a meeting held under the chairmanship of Naib Nazim of Karachi, Tariq Hasan Khan, here on Thursday.

The meeting was attended by the DCO of Karachi, Shafiqur Rehman Paracha, and Capital City Police Chief Asad Jehangir besides Town Nazims, Executive District Officers of the City Government and Town Municipal Officers.

Speaking at the meeting, Naib Nazim Tariq Hasan said the City Government had taken steps for extending help to Towns on the occasion of Eid and it was a welcome feature that this time no complaint about the sale of sacrificial animals anywhere in the city had been received.

He said section 144 imposed in this regard would remain effective even after Eid. Under this order no one would be allowed the cutting of “ojhri” and police had been directed to arrest such persons.

The Naib Nazim said this time all the 18 Towns and 178 union councils would have to get their existence recognized and set a new example.

On the occasion the meeting was informed that the City Government had made special arrangements for the provision of 11 vehicles for carrying out spray of insecticides besides providing necessary resources to Towns. These vehicles will operate under the supervision of TMOs.

It was stated that the City Coordination Cell with telephone number 921-5139 had been set up in the office of EDO-Health, which would work round the clock on Feb 23, 24 and 25.

The meeting was told that the union councils were working for providing collective slaughtering facility at Mohallah-level so as to facilitate the lifting of offal at one place. After slaughtering, lime would be sprinkled on the place.

The union councils would collect offal at one specified place from where it would be lifted by Town Administration to landfill sites. In this regards the UCs have started taking steps for setting up temporary transfer stations.

The meeting was told that till Thursday morning some 450 permission letters were issued for the collection of hides and another 60 were under consideration. If need be, the office of the EDO (Revenue) would remain open on Friday.

It was stated at the meeting that the organizations, which were issued permission letter last year, were given permission forthwith on application. However, new applicants were being issued permission after inquiry.

On the occasion the City police chief, Asad Jehangir, told the meeting about steps taken for the maintenance of law and order. He said police had been deployed on a three-shift basis. He said one shift would be on security of Eidgahs, second will provide protection to hide collectors and the third shift would be on duty for security at recreational places in the evening. He said this system would remain operative for three days.

He said the Town police officers had been directed to remain in close liaison with Town Nazims and consult them for the maintenance of law and order.—APP
