SHEIKHUPURA, Feb 22: Police on Thursday arrested about a dozen ulema during a clash here between two sects in front of the additional district and sessions court while eight clerics suffered injuries.

Reports said ulema from Deobandi and Ahle Sunnat wal Jamat sects appeared before Additional District and Sessions Judge Nazir Ahmed Gajana regarding a `fatwa’ issued by Mufti Tanvirul Haq.

Mr Haq had declared Deobandis as non-Muslim on which Maulvi Siddique had challenged the fatwa in the court. On Thursday both the groups exchanged hot words in front of the court and later pelted stones at each other. As a result of which Nadeem Shakil, Younas and others sustained injuries.

A heavy police contingent, led by ASP Syed Faqir Muhammad, reached the spot and arrested around 12 ulema. Some of them have been identified as Akram, Yasir, Jat, Siddiq and Bilal.

SHOT DEAD: Two people were killed and three injured over an old enmity on Thursday at Wern village, some 30km from here.

Reports said Khyzer Hayat, Imran, Shahbaz, Riaz Malik, Nawaz and others opened fire, killing Maqsood and Mubarik on the spot and injuring Akhtar, Waris and another person.

Two groups, led by Khyzer Hayat and Maqsood, had an old rivalry. Earlier, six people had been murdered from both sides. Police are investigating with no arrest.
