LAHORE, Feb 19; The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) has demanded a high-level inquiry into the complaints of attacks on leaders and members of political parties and action against the perpetrators.

Voicing demand in a statement issued here on Monday, HRCP Chairperson Asma Jehangir said that the commission had received a complaint regarding an attack on Dr Azra Afzal, a parliamentarian and sister-in-law of Pakistan People’s Party leader Benazir Bhutto, while she was travelling in Kotri. The guards of a provincial minister were allegedly responsible for shooting at the vehicle of Ms Afzal, she said.

The attack took place soon after an attack on MNA Sherry Rehman which showed that opposition parliamentarians were being targeted.

She said that the commission had also received reports of killing of PPP leaders in Attock. The HRCP was dismayed over the failure of the authorities to ensure the safety and welfare of opposition activists, the press release said.—Reporter
