Rain showers no mercy on three

MULTAN, Feb 13: Showers of rain caused three deaths on Tuesday and also exposed the ill-planning of the city district government and other civic agencies as all major roads were seen awash with rainwater.

Wazir Mai and Noor Muhammad died and Waqas Ahmed was injured when the roof of their house in Rasheedabad collapsed on Monday night. Bibi Mai was electrocuted in Fatehpur, Mailsi, when she stepped into the rainwater where electricity was flowing through.

There were showers from Monday night till Tuesday morning leaving all major roads and low-lying areas inundated. Life was at standstill in Shaheen Market, on Hafiz Jamal Road, Kaati Marr Road, Writers’ Colony, Gulberg Colony, Masoom Shah Road, Doulat Gate, Delhi Gate, Chah Hafiz Wala, Jamalpura, Karri Jamandaan, Farooqpura, Karri Daud Khan, Basti Mohanian, Mohalla Faridabad, Gharibabad, Bagh Baigi, Mohalla Jogian, Matam Waan, Bheeti Saraey, Bohar Gate, Khoni Burj, New Multan, Gulgasht and Soraj Miani as rainwater entered many houses there after the sewerage system was jammed.

The rain also disrupted power supply and there was no power in Mehmoodabad, Ghauspura, Tariqabad, Datta Colony, Koray Wala, Samijaabad, Piran Ghaib and Arifpura. Many vehicles broke down and were trapped in the rainwater on roads.

Eyewitnesses told Dawn that even though the CDGM had declared emergency, its workers were hardly seen on main intersections fixing sewerage lines.

The suburban areas of the city were hit by hail and rain that damaged the standing wheat crop and vegetables. Agricultural experts have advised the farmers to drain the rainwater from their fields.

According to a Met official, 44.3 mm rain was recorded in Multan. The official forecast more rain in the next few days.
