The inclement weather wreaked havoc, causing intense cold, triggering landslides, washing away bridges, bringing down roofs of houses, inundating low-lying areas and disrupting communication system as well as electricity and gas supplies. Rain-related incidents over two days took the death toll to 31.
In the NWFP, six people were killed and nine others wounded, police and witnesses said.
A woman and her two-year-old son died when the roof of their house caved in Lundkhwar area of Mardan district on Sunday morning, police said. The woman’s husband was injured.
A house collapsed in Serband Sangu locality on the suburbs of Peshawar, killing two minors and injuring four women and two men.
In Peshawar’s Chamkani area, a six-year-old boy was injured in an incident of house collapse. Yet another house collapsed in Yakatoot area.
The rains inundated various low-lying areas and some roads and streets in the provincial capital. Several localities in the city and cantonment faced shortage of natural gas.
In Bajaur Agency, a child died and four other people were injured as rains damaged a number of houses. The agency received 140mm of rain over the past three days and snow has covered various hills. According to locals, high-altitude areas have received 10 to 12 feet of snow.
A 12-year-old boy died and his mother and two brothers received injuries when the house of a police constable collapsed on Saturday night in Afridiabad.
In Landi Kotal, a child was killed when a mud-house collapsed, officials said.
The rains caused flash flood near the Torkham checkpoint and an oil tanker and a pick-up overturned.
Rain and heavy snowfall disrupted power supply in Kurram Agency.
Nathia Gali, Thandiani and other areas in Abbottabad district also received heavy rains and snow.
In Astore, four people were injured by landslides in Chelam, Qamri and Mani Marg areas, police said.
Officials of the Frontier Works Organisation said link roads in Dev Sai, Mir Mulk, Qamri and Mani Marg areas remained blocked by snowfall and landslides. They said the Karakoram and Astore highways might be closed if the snowfall continued.
According to the Met office, one and a half feet of snow had been recorded in the area. Temperature has dropped to minus 13 degrees Celsius, forcing people to stay indoors.
Several cities in Northern Areas also received rain and snow.
Rains continued to lash several Punjab cities, particularly Lahore where 10 deaths were reported.
Five members of a family, including four women, were killed when a double-story house in Lahore’s Christian Colony collapsed early in the morning.
Mukhtar Masih, 70, was asleep in his house along with his wife Sakina and daughters Posha, Pooma, Uma and Nanci when the roof of an upper storey room caved in. The couple and their daughters were rushed to the General Hospital where all but Sakina expired.
Three persons were killed when the roof of a poultry farm in Pind Pandoki, Kahna, collapsed. The owner of the farm and two other people who were at the farm at that time were buried alive.
In another incident, two labourers died while three people sustained injuries when the newly-laid roof of a goods transport office collapsed in Akbari Gate area on Sunday.
In Balochistan, 11 people were killed in rain related-incidents on Saturday while communication system in various areas was badly affected and two bridges over the RCD highway were washed away were washed away.
Many parts of northern Balochistan, including Muslim Bagh, Kan Mehtarzai, Khanozai, Ziarat, Toba Achakzai and Toba Kakari were hit by the inclement weather.
"About a dozen people were killed in different areas due to roof collapse and other rain-related incidents," Raziq Bugti, spokesman for the provincial government said, adding that the authorities concerned were making efforts to restore communication system.
Official sources said a woman and her three children were killed when the roof of a house owned by Ghulam Ahmed in Muslim Bagh collapsed on Saturday afternoon.
In Toba Achakzai area of Pishin district, three people, including a woman, were killed in another incident of roof collapse.
According to report from Nushki, two children were swept away in flood water from nearby mountains. Their bodies were later recovered by the levies personnel. Two more people were reported killed in Pat Feeder and Turbat areas.
Traffic between Quetta and Karachi that remained suspended for more then 24 hours on Saturday due to the collapse of bridges over the RCD highway was restored on Sunday.
However, traffic could not be restored between Quetta and Loralai via Ziarat and Toba Achakzai while the road linking Quetta with Chaman was opened to traffic on Sunday.
Dozens of mud-houses were damaged in Sibi, Dalbandin, Nushki, Pishin, Chaman, Zhob, Kalat, Mastung and Nasirabad areas.
According to the Met office, the westerly system causing the rain and snowfall would begin moving out of Punjab and the NWFP by Monday. It would, however, continue to affect the Northern Areas and Azad Kashmir during the next 24 to 36 hours before fully moving over to India and Nepal.
It said Peshawar received 37mm of rain, Dera Ghazi Khan 35mm, Noorpur Thal 33mm, Malamjabba 29mm, Kotli 28mm, Sargodha 25mm, Bannu 24mm, Islamabad 23mm, Murree 20mm, Jhelum 16mm, Jhang 15mm, Kohat 15mm, Cherat 15mm, Dir 15mm, Saidu Sharif 13mm, Mandi Bahauddin 11mm, Muzaffarabad 9mm, Kakul 8mm and Lahore and D I Khan (72 mm in 48 hours).
