PESHAWAR, Feb 10: An organisation for the indigent and dispossessed on Saturday announced its maiden work plan in the areas of health, education and social welfare.

The organisation, ‘Tanzeem Lissaail-e-Wal-Mahroom’, an initiative of the NWFP chief minister, has been launched with an allocation of Rs400 million for three years.

Former NWFP chief secretary Abdullah has been appointed as chairman of the organisation, with eight notables of the provincial metropolis as its members.

Speaking at a press conference after the first meeting of the organisation, Mr Abdullah said coordinating welfare activities of all organisations, evolving a partnership with private charities, promoting welfare awareness and encouraging philanthropists to widen their activities were major objectives of the project.

Giving details about the decisions taken at the meeting, he said that in the education sector, one orphan student of primary class from each union council of the province would be given a career stipend. This stipend, he said, would continue till the completion of his or her education.

Similarly, he said, scholarships for intelligent students on the tehsil level were also part of the plan.

In the health sector, he said, the organisation would provide free medicines and treatment to the needy through selected hospitals. During the next six months, 50 poor patients of hepatitis would be given free treatment, he said.

Mr Abdullah pointed out that the organisation would establish two canteens on the premises of Lady Reading Hospital and Hayatabad Medical Complex in Peshawar, where people would be given one-time meal and breakfast free.

Likewise, the establishment of a shelter for orphans of the earthquake-affected areas, provision of machinery for the Itfaq Kidney Centre, setting up of a private hospital and commencement of technical training courses for the destitute were some of the activities of the organisation, he added.
