‘Rs153m irregularity in Zakat fund’

GUJRANWALA, Feb 9: An audit report submitted to the district nazim on Friday revealed financial irregularity worth Rs153.676 million in 2003-04 committed by the district zakat committee.

The report said the committee gave Rs3.275 million to local zakat councils for disbursement among the poor but the field clerks of 126 councils bought new motorcycles and registered them in their names. The report also mentioned that Rs11.432 million were given to these councils on bank advice without any lawful authority.

The audit report pointed out that the district zakat committee chairman transferred the chairmen of at least 73 local zakat councils and posted 156 councils’ chairmen who were under-matriculate. It also revealed that Rs585,000 were given to unregistered schemes besides paying Rs200,000 in excess to applicants. The health zakat committee paid Rs119 million to people without any selection.

The report recommended training of zakat committees’ chairmen and clerks besides revamping the system.

REPORT: District nazim Fiaz Ahmad Chattha has sought details of Rs6 million raised through a cricket match between Pakistan and India last year for the earthquake affected people and not depositing the amount in the president’s relief fund.

It is learnt that the nazim sent a memorandum to the DCO and sought a reply within three days.

It was suggested that a cheque for the amount would be given to President Gen Musharraf during his visit here on Feb 16.

BISE DIRECTIVE: The Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education directed private schools to remove the word ‘cadet’ from their names on the orders of General Headquarters and renew their registration and affiliation with it.

Meanwhile, an All Pakistan Private Schools Management Association delegation met the BISE chairman on Friday and suggested that the notification in this regard should have been issued by the Punjab government instead Inter-Boards Committee of Chairmen.

The delegation pointed out that the GHQ gave Dec 17, 2007, deadline to rename schools.

VISIT: The ruling party and district administration started preparation for the visit of President Gen Pervez Musharraf to the city on Feb 16.

According to the schedule, the president would inaugurate Punjab University campus and a grid station in Naukher on Hafizabad Road besides addressing a public meeting at Jinnah Stadium.
