KARACHI, Feb 7: Electioneering in the February10 by-election for the National Assembly seat, NA-250 Karachi-XII), draws to a close on Thursday-Friday midnight.

Although several of the 13 candidates who had filed their nomination papers have already announced their withdrawal from the contest, the ballot paper would carry their names as their declaration had come after the last date for the withdrawals.

The candidates nominated and supported by major parties and alliances are Akhlaq Hussain Abidi of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, Nafees Ahmed Siddiqui of the Pakistan People’s Party, Raja Arif Sultan Minhas of the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal and Saleem Zia of the PML-N. The independent candidates are: Amber Raza Nancy, Eng Abdul Aziz, Prof Abdul Qadir Shaikh, Javed Ahmad Chattari, Zulfiqar Ali Qaimkhani, Syed Rashid Ahmad, Ghulam Mohyuddin, Fauzia Ejaz, and Mehfooz Yar Khan.

The seat has fallen vacant due to the demise of its occupant, Abdul Sattar Afghani, who had contested for it in the 2002 general elections from the platform of the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal. He had secured 21,462 votes. The constituency had around 205,400 registered voters. His nearest rival was Ms Nasreen Jalil of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement who had secured 19,414 votes. The other candidates included Dr Mirza Ikhtiar Baig of PPP (12,105 votes) Mamnoon Hussain of the PML-N (5,565 votes).

The turn out in the previous election for the seat was 33.7 per cent. The number of total votes cast was 69,235 out of which 952 votes stood rejected.

The PML-Q had fielded M.A. Wajid Jawwad who bagged 4,718 votes. Syed Kamal Shah of the Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaaf got 3,176 votes and Syed Javed Omar, who had contested from the platform of the Sunni Tehrik had secured 1,226 votes. Mrs Surriya Rahim of Tehrik-i-Istiqlal bagged 144, Nazir Ibrahim Shaikh of the Mohajir Qaumi Movement (Haqiqi) 150 and S. M. Altaf of the Pakistan Mazdoor Kissan Party 44 votes.

Among the independent candidates, Khalid Kamal polled 83, Noor Mohammad 69, Ovais Siddique Jagda 64, Tahir Sharif Khan 47 and Raja Arif Sultan Minhas 16 votes.

For the Feb 10 polling, 135 polling stations have been set up in almost the same locations as in the previous general elections. A detailed list of polling stations with number of votes in each polling station is as under:
