LAHORE, Jan 29: Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi on Monday asked the parliamentarians, PML office-bearers, nazims and workers to play their role in promoting religious harmony and peace in society.

Addressing the union council nazims, naib nazims and councillors from Gujrat, he said the provincial ministers should fulfill their responsibilities in maintenance of law and order in all districts.

Similarly, peace committees at police station, tehsil and district levels represented by different schools of thought should also play their active role in creating atmosphere of peace and harmony.

Pervaiz Elahi said nazims should hold meetings of peace committees at local, tehsil and district levels.

“It is the duty of peace committees to watch any objectionable literature and inform immediately to the respective quarters.” He said the government had sped up campaign against provocative literature and action was being initiated against publishers and printers of such literature.

“The historic sacrifices of “Shuhada-e-Karbala” teach us that all Muslims should live with unity and harmony to promote sentiments of peace and tranquility.”

He said better law and order conditions were indispensable for growth and industrial development of the country.

He said the recent incidents were terrorist activities against the country and not sectarian issue and they were being thoroughly investigated.

“Mutual confidence between Shia and Sunni sects is increasing and they respect each other,” he said.

Mr Elahi said ulema of all schools of thought were performing an excellent role in curbing sectarianism and maintaining unity.

He directed all the district police officers to keep a vigilant eye on routes of processions and watch carefully any anti-social elements and provide complete security to mourners.

The chief minister said nazims and parliamentarians should take steps for ensuring complete peace and harmony with discipline.
