Pakistan-India commission to meet next month

ISLAMABAD, Jan 28: The Pakistan-India Joint Commission, co-chaired by foreign ministers of the two countries, will convene in New Delhi on February 21, to discuss bolstering of bilateral cooperation in diverse sectors, diplomatic sources told Dawn on Sunday.

The one-day joint commission sitting will be preceded by meetings of two sub-commissions on information and education on February 20, sources said, adding that these were the only two of the eight working groups that had not met so far.

Indian External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee had extended an invitation for the JC meeting to Mr Kasuri during his visit here earlier this month.

This will be their third meeting since November 2006 when they first met in New Delhi during Mr Kasuri’s private trip to India.

On the margins of the JC meeting several important agreements will be initialled.

These include: (a) The Agreement on Reducing the Risk from Accidents relating to Nuclear Weapons; (b) Speedy return of inadvertent Line Crossers; and (c) Prevention of Incidents at Sea.

Foreign Minister Khurshid Kasuri will be leading a high-level delegation to New Delhi on the eve of the JC meeting.

The meeting will be held at Indian capital’s historic Hyderabad House that has been the venue of several rounds of high-profile Indo-Pakistan talks.

The Pakistan-India Joint Commission was established in March 1983.
