PESHAWAR, Jan 27: An accountability court on Saturday sentenced an employee of the Pakistan Railways to four-year rigorous imprisonment with Rs1.2 million fine for corruption.

In case of default, the convict will have to undergo one year more imprisonment.

The court presided over by Ms Irshad Qaiser ruled that the prosecution had proved its case against Mian Farmanullah Jan and the evidence on record proved his involvement in the commission of the offence.

The convict, who was serving as upper division clerk, was arrested on Oct 8, 2004, by the National Accountability Bureau on charges of misappropriating pension funds to the tune of Rs1.27 million.

A reference was filed on Jan 18, 2005, by NAB before the accountability court and Mian Farmanullah was charged under the NAB Ordinance, 1999.

The public prosecutor argued that the accused had misused his office by misappropriating the money meant for the Railways’ employees.

He said that the action was an offence under the NAB Ordinance.

OFFICIALS ARRESTED: Three officials of the revenue department were arrested after their pre-arrest bail applications were dismissed by the special anti-corruption judge, Mohammad Sharif Khan, here on Saturday.

The three officials -- Ajmal Khan, Sultan Mahmood and Daud Khan -- were charged with preparing forged transfer deeds and incurring loss to the exchequer.

The public prosecutor told the court that the accused had registered fake transfer deeds regarding a land possessed by one Fida Hussain in the Haripur district.

He added that after an inquiry an FIR was registered by the anti-corruption police against the three accused.
