PESHAWAR, Feb 19: The NWFP government will soon promulgate the Juvenile Justice System Ordinance 2000, for the protection of child prisoners’ rights.

This was stated by the representatives of provincial government at a one-day training workshop about the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, held here on Tuesday.

The  workshop, organized by the Plan Pakistan, a  non- governmental organization, focussed on the training of government functionaries and staff of the non-governmental organization, working on different child-related projects in the province, says a Press release.

The Juvenile Justice System Ordinance was enacted on July 1, 2002 by President Pervez Musharraf.

The ordinance provides a base for the protection of the rights of children involved in criminal litigation and an addition to the existing corpus of child-friendly laws.

Although, Punjab and Sindh have partially enforced this ordinance, the NWFP and Balochistan are yet to have the law dealing with juvenile delinquents.

Speaking at the workshop, the government representatives from the social work department disclosed that the implementation of the  Juvenile  Justice  System Ordinance, 2000  was  under consideration, adding that the provincial government would  soon promulgate the ordinance.

The Plan Pakistan consultant highlighted different sections of the CRC, which emphasized on civil rights and freedom, proper family environment and alternative care, provision of basic health and welfare, education, leisure and cultural activities and special protection measures.
