Attack on Bhinders: death toll rises

LAHORE, Jan 21: A Ferozwala tehsil municipal employee who was injured during firing on additional advocate general Arif Bhinder died at the Ganga Ram Hospital on Sunday.

With his death, the toll in the Jan 12 ambush on Waris Road rose to eight. One of assailants and main accused Malik Zahid was also killed when police escorting the AAG had returned the fire.

Waris Ali, 35, was accompanying Ferozwala TMO Kashif Binder, the younger brother of Arif. Kashif was also killed in the attack by their rivals.

Father of three, Waris was a resident of Kot Shahabuddin, Shahdra.

Meanwhile, police investigation into the killings and search for the assailants continues.

DIG investigation Azam Joyia told Dawn that one of the accused, SP Malik Kamran Yusuf, was quizzed for four hours on Sunday by a special team headed by him to ascertain his role, if any, in the killing of eight people. Yususf is the brother-in-law of Malik Zahid and one of the 10 nominated accused.

Joyia was optimistic that other accused would be arrested within the deadline set by the government.

Sources meanwhile said that SP Kamran Yusuf had denied his involvement in the killings. He was also unaware of the whereabouts of other accused.
