GUJRANWALA, Jan 6: As many as five people, including two women, were killed while a dozen others suffered injuries in road accidents in and around the city here on Saturday.
Razia Bibi of Khiali Shahpur was crossing the road when a speeding bus ran over her, killing her on the spot. A passer-by, Allah Rakha, was on his way on Sheikhupura Road when a tractor-trolley hit him. He died on way to DHQ hospital.
In another incident, truck driver Muhammad Aslam of Havelian was run over and killed by a commuter bus near Mor Kot Shahan when he was crossing the GT Road after taking meal from a hotel.
Bicyclist Muhammad Asgher of Wazirabad was run over and killed by a wagon on Sialkot Road when he was on his way to Bhattike village. A passenger bus struck against a tree in Wazirabad, killing Sultana Bibi of Nizamabad (Wazirabad) and injuring about a dozen passengers. The injured were rushed to THQ hospital.
B<>COMPUTERISATION: Punjab Excise and Taxation Minister Rana Shamshad Ahmad Khan on Saturday inaugurated computerised registration of vehicles in the district.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, he said the process had been started in Rawalpindi, Multan, Faisalabad, Sialkot and Nankana Sahib simultaneously after its success in Lahore. In these cities, old registration of vehicles would be computerised shortly.
Provincial excise secretary Javed Aslam, DCO Manzer Hayat, E&T director Sikander Hayat and other senior officers were also present on the occasion.
Speaking of dilapidated roads, the provincial minister said sanitation and condition of Gujranwala roads were worst than that of other cities while the district government was delaying uplift projects despite release of funds.
On this occasion, the E&T director said serial GAA-07 number plates were being fixed to cars and other vehicles and GAK-07 to motorcycles with white and blue colours, respectively.
