HYDERABAD, Jan 4: Russian experts are likely to arrive at Jamshoro thermal power house for rehabilitation of one of its units that was burnt in December, causing a shortfall of 170 megawatts of electricity to the national grid.

The overhauling of the unit-II has been approved by the Wapda headquarters on the request of the power house administration which had sought the approval before the fire incident.

Sources in the power house said that since 34,000 running hours of the unit-II had been completed, it was already due for overhauling in February and now Wapda had approved it with directives to complete it by March 31.

An official source said that during repair work, its overhauling would also be carried out and the Wapda authorities had been informed about the schedule.

"Probably Russian experts will be sent for refurbishment of the plant's China-made unit-II because the experts are familiar with the design of the plant and they have provided similar equipment to China in the past. Chinese experts could be sent for the purpose as well", said the official.

He expressed the hope that experts would arrive in a fortnight.

Other three units -- I, III and IV --- are working and producing 200 megawatts and 170 megawatts each of electricity, respectively.

The rehabilitation and overhauling of the plant was sought in December to avoid any shortfall of electricity to national grid before coming summer season.

The damages to the unit-II due to fire would also be ascertained during its rehabilitation because entire equipment would be opened. A report would be submitted to the authorities, the source said.
