LAHORE, Nov 30: Agitated mob damaged four public transport buses as a toddler and a teenager were killed and seven others hurt when a speeding bus hit a donkey-cart, a rickshaw and two motorcycles on Ferozpur Road here on Thursday.

Eyewitnesses said the vehicles were stationed at Qainchi Chowk traffic signal when an intra-city route bus on way to Kahna rammed into the donkey-cart before hitting a rickshaw, dragging the both to a few yards. The bus then also hit two motorcycles.

Police said the accident occurred due to brake failure, without explaining how they managed to determine the fault so early, even without getting the killer bus technically examined.

“The driver lost control over the bus either due to over speeding or brake failure and hit the stationary vehicles,” said a trader who was present at his shop at the Qainchi chowk when the accident occurred.

Cart driver Qadeer died on the spot while Habiba, 4, who was on a motorcycle with his father, succumbed to his injuries in the General Hospital. The LGH emergency ward staff confirmed admission of eight injured.

The people, present on the scene, nabbed the bus driver, thrashed him and later handed him over to the Factory Area police.

The injured were identified as Shazia, Rasheed, Qamar David, Ishaq, Ahmed Din, Ashraf and Husain.

“I was at Qainchi Stop signal along with my wife Shazia and daughter Habiba on a bike to reach Ghazi Road when the bus hit my motorcycle from behind,” said Umer Farooq of Abid Mohala Ghazi Road.

Soon after the incident, enraged mob blocked both sides of the road and started damaging public transport vehicles in protest. The protesters damaged four buses.

A majority of shopkeepers of Main Ferozpur Road closed their shops soon after the mob started damaging the vehicles.
