MIRPURKHAS, Nov 21: Activists of Irrigation Permanent Field Labour Union observed strike on Tuesday to press the government for acceptance of their demands.

Hundreds of irrigation employees including daroghas, beldars, khalasis, tandails and operators took part in the strike, which brought the gauges of regulators on all the distributaries in the Nara canal system to a standstill causing difficulties to officers in ascertaining the supply of water into distributaries.

The union’s president Mubarak Ali Chandio told newsmen that they had called upon the government to stop fresh recruitment on the posts which had fallen vacant after the death of employees and appoint their sons and relatives.

He said that it was part of a conspiracy against the field staff and the union would not allow the department to make fresh recruitment. The strike would continue until the government accepted their demands, he warned.
