TOBA TEK SINGH, Oct 3: Hundreds of Gojra farmers blocked the Gojra-Jhang Road near Chak 359 JB, some 10 kilometers from Gojra, on Tuesday afternoon for more than three hours in protest against shortage of irrigation water.
The protesters set old tyres to fire and stopped supply of water in Titranwala minor canal. They also raised slogans against irrigation department officers for failing to supply required quantity of water.
Former union council nazim Arshad Bobak, councillor Munir Gujjar and elders of Chak 359 JB and 360 JB led the protesters.
Addressing the participants, they alleged that the irrigation officers received bribe from farmers but even then water was not supplied to them.
They said as a result of water shortage, their crops were being destroyed and even then they were forced to pay abiana (water cess) for the water which was not supplied to them.
Heavy police contingents also reached the area.
They ended their protest after assurance by the irrigation officers that the approved quantity of water would be supplied in the minor canal.
TRANSFER: District Officer (health) Dr Siraj Din Shad was transferred on Tuesday.
A source said that there were various complaints against him.
