MIRPURKHAS, Sept 25: Farmers of the district have sufferd heavy losses because of the recent rain and flood. According to official sources 67 per cent cotton, 80 per cent chillies, 25 per cent sugarcane and 80 per cent vegetables have been damaged in the area.
A survey conducted by the district agriculture extension department said that cotton was sown on 89,167 acres in the district and farmers suffered losses amounting Rs1194.4 million.
Chilli was sown on 14,943 acres and growers suffered loss of Rs358.62 million, sugarcane crop on 28,652 acres and farmers lost of Rs214.890 million and vegetables on 18,554 acres and farmers sustained loss of Rs371.075 million.
In Mirpurkhas taluka, cotton was cultivated on 13,498 acres where 60 per cent crop of Rs161.980 million was destroyed.
Chilli was sown on 160 acres which sustained 75 per cent losses worth Rs3.6 million.
Sugarcane was cultivated on 5,125 acres which suffered 15 per cent losses worth Rs23.1 million.
Vegetables were sown on 2,778 acres which sustained 70 per cent losses.
In Sindhri taluka, cotton was sown on 16,425 acres and farmers suffered 75 per cent losses worth Rs246.380 million.
Chilli was sowed on 123 acres, which was destroyed upto 90 per cent causing loss of Rs3.33 million.
Sugarcane was sown on 4,841 acres and 35 per cent was damaged which was worth Rs50.820 million.
In Hussein Bux Mari taluka, cotton was sown on 10,621 acres and farmers suffered losses of Rs191.180 million which was 90 per cent of the damage.
Chilli was sown on 49 acres which was 100 per cent damaged hence growers sustained loss of Rs1.47 million.
Sugarcane was sown on 3,907 acres and 45 per cent damaged amounting to Rs52.740 million.
Vegetables were sown on 1,605 acres which were 100 per cent damaged.
In Digri taluka, cotton was sown on 16,005 acres and 60 per cent was damaged incurring a loss of Rs192.060 million.
Chilli was sown on 4,594 acres and 80 per cent was damaged amounting to Rs110.250 million loss. Sugarcane was sown on 4,737 acres and 20 per cent was damaged.
Vegetables were sown on 2,865 acres and 70 per cent were damaged causing loss of Rs50.150 million to farmers.
In Jhuddo taluka, cotton was sown on 15,067 acres and 60 per cent was damaged which cost growers Rs180.800 million.
Chilli was sown on 5,767 acres and 70 per cent was damaged hence growers sustained losses of Rs121.110 million.
Sugarcane was sown on 4,112 acres and 15 per cent was damaged. Vegetables were sown on 2,815 acres and 70 per cent were damaged.
In Kot Ghulam Mohammed taluka, cotton was sown on 17,549 acres and 60 per cent was damaged.
Chilli was sown on 4,248 acres and 80 per cent was damaged.
Sugarcane was sown on 5,928 acres and 20 per cent was damaged vegetables were sown on 6,266 acres and 80 per cent were damaged.
