LAHORE, Sept 21: A large number of city government schools’ headmasters and headmistresses on Thursday staged a peaceful demonstration in front of Lahore Press Club to protest against the torture and humiliation meted out to Baghbanpura High School senior headmaster Anwar Ali Mujahid.
The demonstration was organised by the Punjab Government School Senior Staff Association (PGSSSA). Protesters were carrying banners and placards bearing inscriptions against hooliganism in educational institutions.
Led by association president Hafiz Abdul Nasir, protesters demanded that the government should register a case and arrest Mian Akhlaq Guddu and his accomplices who tortured elderly senior headmaster in his office.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Nasir said that all city schools were also observing academic boycott that would continue till Saturday (tomorrow).
If the government did not get a case registered against Guddu and his accomplices till Saturday (today), the PGSSSA would organise a teachers’ meeting at Government High School, Khazana Gate, and hold a protest walk either towards the Punjab Assembly or the Punjab Civil Secretariat, he said.
The teachers said that nazims and political activists were interfering in the affairs of educational institutions and humiliating the teachers’ community.
They urged the chief minister to take notice of the situation and take appropriate action to end restlessness among teachers.
Meanwhile, no action has been taken against Mian Akhlaq Guddu.
Shalimar police station SHO Zahid Shah told Dawn that neither he had received any application from the victim nor the DIG (operations) had issued any directive to take action against the accused.
When contacted, DIG (operations) Aamir Zulfikar Khan was not available for comments.
