LAHORE, Sept 11: Justice Mohammad Muzammil Khan of the Lahore High Court on Monday issued fresh notices to various lawyers’ bodies in a writ petition which sought to bring down the number of law journals.
The court issued notices to the vice-chairpersons of the Pakistan and the Punjab bar councils, the president of the Lahore High Court Bar Association and editors of the PLD, seeking their views about the publication of as many as nine law journals.
The court observed that the publication of law journals stood commercialised whereas fewer journals could serve the purpose of giving information to judges and lawyers about the latest decisions of the Supreme Court, high courts and other judicial fora.
The writ petition was filed in October 1998 by advocate M D Tahir, submitting that a number of law journals were publishing almost identical court decisions The number of publications was also a burden on lawyers, particularly those who could not afford Rs640 a month. He pleaded that the price should be less than Rs100.
Earlier, the PLD editor submitted a report according to which the PLD, the SCMR, the CLC, the MLD, the PTD, the PLC, the P Cr L J, YLR and the CLD were being published every month.
