KARACHI, Sept 7: Muttahida Qaumi Movement chief Altaf Hussain said on Thursday that a section of clerics was determined to keep women deprived of their rights. In a statement issued from the MQM international secretariat in London, he said amendments to the Hudood laws had been made in the light of Quran and Sunnah.

“But, unfortunately, this section of clerics wants to make sure that women remain inferior to men in Pakistan,” he said.

Speaking on specific objections of religious scholars to the proposed amendments to the Hudood laws, Mr Hussain said some clerics were seeking to mislead the nation.

He said Islam laid great stress on women’s rights, adding that the amendments to the Hudood laws finalized by the select committee of the National Assembly were in accordance with Sunnah.
