GUJRAT, Sept 6: A Gujrat tehsil council member belonging to the ruling PML has alleged bungling and corruption by some officials of the tehsil municipal administration (TMA).
In a statement here on Wednesday, Hanif Haideri said the TMA had around 15 peter-engines, but only five were in working condition.
He alleged instead of drawing Rs19,000 for the provision of diesel for these engines in July, the relevant officials had drawn Rs119,000 thus embezzling an amount of Rs100,000.
He said some thieves took away one engine from the residence of a contractor, and he promised to pay Rs20,000 to the TMA.
But he had not paid the amount so far. One engine was in the possession of a house owner owing to non-payment of rent by the contractor.
The TMA had 12 tractor-trolleys and seven of them were out of order. It hired seven vehicles for sanitation purposes.
He alleged the actual expenditure on diesel for tractors in July was Rs238,000, but the officials concerned embezzled Rs437,000 by drawing a sum of Rs675,000.
He further alleged that the officials also embezzled Rs500,000 in the name of salary for workcharged employees during the same period.
He alleged the officials in the fire-brigade section were also involved in corruption.
A vehicle had been out of order for the last many months, but the officials had regularly been getting money for its diesel.
He alleged the actual monthly diesel expenditure on fire-brigade vehicles was around Rs85,000, but the officials were drawing Rs150,000.
He urged the higher authorities to order a probe into the matter.
