MIRPURKHAS, Aug 22: Army has been called out to assist the civil administration to handle the situation arising out of breaches in the Left Bank Outfall Drain. “Troops have arrived and they will start relief work in Hussain Bux Mari taluka where one breach occurred near Mumtazabad and other adjoining villages”, said administrative officer of the DCO.
About 300 military personnel led by Colonel Saleem along with 10 boats and 20 private vehicles reached the affected area and started relief work.
The situation was aggravated in the taluka following heavy rain and breaches in the LBOD causing inundation of land and villages.
The authorities are focusing on relief work and saving lives of villages and livestock.
About 15 relief camps have been set up by district government in Shah Abdul Latif College Mirpurkhas, Government Comprehensive Higher Secondary School Mirpurkhas and six in Hussain Bux Mari taluka and remaining in Sindhri taluka.
A vast area of land in UC Khan, Old Mirpur and Turk Ali Mari were submerged under rain and saline water.
About 8,000 affected villagers have been evacuated to relief camps where food and medical treatment were being provided to them.
A large area of Mirpurkhas-Nawabshah railway track was also inundated.
Dehs affected badly are 92 and 94 in Hussain Bux Mari taluka.
District Nazim Dr Sughra Junejo, DCO Mumtaz Shah, EDO (revenue) Rahim Soomro, DPO Abdullah Shaikh and Hussain Bux Mari taluka nazim Mumtaz Mari visited affected areas and examined rescue and relief operation.
