ISLAMABAD, Aug 17: Cuban Ambassador Gustavo Machin Gorez has said the West has a lot of misconceptions about Pakistan and it is important that westerners are given the real picture of the country.

“I understand that there is a lot of misconception in the West about Pakistan as I am feeling very comfortable and happy to work here. I have travelled extensively in the Northern Areas and found Pakistan a beautiful place with beautiful and friendly people.

Therefore I think it is very important for the people in the West to know what the reality is,” he said while talking to Federal Minister for Law Mohammad Wasi Zafar here on Thursday.

The ambassador showed keen interest about the functioning of law and legal institutions in Pakistan, and said it would help him in increasing his knowledge of Pakistan’s position in the current scenario.

The minister briefed the envoy about the latest legal reforms the government intends to propose to the parliament for approval. He apprised the visiting envoy that in Pakistan, Parliament was supreme and no law could be enacted without its approval.

Commenting on the security issues, the envoy said Pakistan and Cuba had many things in common especially its concern with security.

Pointing to the current global campaign against terrorism, he said: “We didn’t say that we do not support war on terror. We just say that we are against all forms of terrorism”.—Our Reporter
