ATTOCK, Aug 17: The sale and use of prohibited, substandard and fake pesticides and chemicals continue in the district and adjoining areas despite a government ban, it has been learnt.

A number of local farmers and agriculturists complained that the harmful chemicals and poisons were not only creating health problems, but also threatening growers-friendly pests and birds.

Three departments of federal and provincial governments — plant protection, pest warning and quality control of pesticides and agriculture extension — are responsible to implement the ban on prohibited pesticides and fertilisers, the farmers said.

However, these departments have failed to fulfil their responsibility as banned products are being sold openly in the markets by the companies and their dealers. On the other hand, pesticide inspectors and other authorities concerned are also showing leniency towards taking action against such companies and dealers, they added.

The agriculturists asked the government to collect samples of pesticides for chemical analysis and take strict legal action against those dealing in substandard products.

Eight arrested: Rangu police have foiled an attempt to steal wood and arrested eight persons.
